Corset-Bodies (Bodysuits)

Madonna in the famous Gaultier corset-inspired bodysuit. Blond Ambition tour 1990.

A corset bodysuit or bunnysuit is a like a laced and boned leotard, or a corset and brief in one. It may be either overbust or underbust, but it extends down over the crotch area. These pieces give ultimate lower-tummy control; a mother’s apron falling out of the bottom of a corset is not an option with this cut! When worn under clothing, this style of corset can be worn without fear of the bottom edge of the busk flaring out to create an unfortunate bump in the pubic region the way some conventional corsets do.

That said, corset-bodies are not the most convenient or practical of clothing, particularly if the crotch doesn’t have hooks or snaps to open; if you own one of these pieces, be sure to leave yourself lots of time to go to the restroom. These corsets may also be quite rigid, and you may feel that most of your torso has reduced mobility from your upper chest down to the bum. Nevertheless, they make a stunning addition to one’s collection and they reflect a certain mastery in patterning by the corsetiere.

  1. Can anyone please just tell me where I can actually buy one of these? All these links are either for artists/art shows (which are just gallery pages and not shopping destinations), etsy items that are no longer available, or patterns to make one yourself (which is far far outside my skill set).

I just want to buy one and yet no one anywhere seems to actually sell them (and the best google, amazon, and ebay turn up is cheap Playboy bunny halloween costumes made of stretchy fabric).

    1. Hi Sapphire, have you tried messaging the Etsy shops and asking the maker to start a commission? The Etsy listings are often one-off samples (in a specific size which might not match your measurements) but they’re meant to showcase the corsetiere’s skills. Even if the maker does not have these specific listings in their shop anymore, many of them are still open for commissions, but you have to email or contact them.

      1. I suppose that true. And if that’s all there is, then that’s all there is. It’s just so frustrating that that’s the lengths I have to go through.

There’s dozens of corset shops out there that offer decently made and reasonably priced “standard” corsets for a hundred dollars or less, but if I want one that goes just a bit farther and does a little more, suddenly my only option is bespoke specialists whose custom work starts at 300-500 if I’m lucky.

I don’t have unreasonable or outlandish tastes. I don’t need one made of silk and velour, covered in rhinestones and bows with an artsy elaborate neckline. I’d be happy with a simple white or nude one, no frills, no bells and whistles, just some good functional steel (I’d even settle for strong plastic) boning.

And yet it’s just not available without making me jump through hoops.

Sorry for ranting a bit, but it’s just so frustrating and it wears at me. This is the internet; where you’re supposed to be able to find anything and everything for sale, and yet this one item eludes me. But at bespoke prices, I guess it’ll just have to remain a pipe dream.

Thanks for trying to help anyway.

        1. Not just for Sapphire but for the sake of others who may reading this in the future and feel similarly – it’s worth noting that unfortunately there are simply way too many measurements and factors that go into making a well-fitting bodysuit without having to depend on Lycra to fudge the dimensions:

Bust/cup size, width and projection; rib breadth, length and curve; waist reduction and position; hip width and slope; crotch depth; bum projection and curve; width between the legs etc. – it’s next to impossible to design something that works for most people the way that a simple underbust might. It’s a specialist item which often takes a maker over 100 hours to complete when you factor in the drafting, multiple mockup fittings, and final product, even for a piece made from simple coutil and no embellishment.

To find a maker who vibes with your aesthetic, fits your specific needs, is comfortable with working with your body shape, and is both communicative and skilled enough to then go through the fitting process together, is well worth the hour or two of footwork to message a few brands and start a conversation. I’m sorry that this is widely considered to be jumping though hoops, but for something that is so intimately fitted, at this point in time there is no other alternative.

    2. Many years too late but just wanted to let you know that you can find plenty of corseted body/bunny suits on Etsy :)

  3. Hey, just wanted to let you know that the Irina IriSSa Pavshina image link seems to be expired!

    1. Yikes! Thanks for letting me know. I’ve changed the link to her Livemaster Shop.

  4. I cannot find a damn one online to buy! just a simple black one :(

    1. Hi Lindsay, here is my shop page with black corsets, there are a few simple ones that might appeal to you.

  5. Hi lucy, I would like to ask you for some advice:
I have never worn corsets and I’m not interested in bodyshaping/waist training; I am a singer and I would love to wear a corset-body for esthetic purposes only, and with the aim of performing, which means that in order to sing and dance I need to breath fully and comfortably.
Do you think it is possible to have this result just by loosening the laces or, when it comes to the choice of the measurements, going for a larger waist, adding some centimeters to my actual size?
And, just to know, generally, could I wear corsets without forcing my waist, and keeping my natural size? or just for the sake of the esthetics of the piece? thanks (:

    1. Hi Robb, if you’re ordering this corset completely custom, then I’m sure you can discuss with your corset maker what elements you like and don’t like (for instance, adding some powermesh panels for mobility, and having your corset at zero reduction). I do normally recommend that a corset be fitted one or two inches smaller than the natural waist and then you can lace to adjust looser if you want; but a corset that’s the same size as your normal waist has a tendency to shift around and might chafe the skin.

    2. I suspect Robb is male. The criteria for a male singer are different, to some extent, but are not necessarily massively so.
What I would suggest from the side of the podium, from a voice mentor, is that you have a look at how the Natural Voice theories work in this direction. The thing is, that whereas the upper voice ranges can work very well from the throat and chest, as you go lower, each octave requires double the vibrating mass, and we soon run out of push, so the guys learn to use the entire body cavity and beyond. Yes, the diaphragm still drives the lungs, but it’s no longer musculature, it’s resonance, and I suspect a more rigid torso may actually help that. The vocal chords are just the resonator which produce the tone, not the amplifier and resonant chambers which colour it, and are so small they don’t actually need huge amounts of air to work. The diaphragm is protected by the lower ribs, so as long as you aren’t into surgery or suchlike, there’s a practical limit to the amount of reduction you can achieve.
OK, within that framework, how does this work? You build off the other rigid framework, which holds the rest together lower down, the pelvic basin. What happens below, around the loins, is rather immaterial to that, and the key measurement is from the crease at the solar plexus, where the thorax becomes the abdomen, to the cavity at the bottom of the sternum (breastbone) which conveniently is also just below where the breasts lie. You can go two ways here, reflected in the split between underbreast and belt corsets in women: you can form a rigid framework connecting the two anchor points, or you can target the soft tissues of the belly, producing a “wasp waist” – in which case you need to allow sufficient extra space for the excess flesh to fit between the bones of the corset and the pelvis below, and the ribs above. Generally, the underbreast approach is wiser.
Therefore, part of the answer to your question lies both in your torso morphology and in how it’s approached. Rather than go for an all-out shape forced into place by boning, another option allows for that, a four-part corset where the sides are also laced. Not only does that allow for more gradual reduction, but it also allows for a known form to the back, which is muscular and shouldn’t change much, and the belly, which is less so. You end up with a cuirass, effectively, where breastplate and backplate are the most defined and the pull comes from joining them at the sides, rather than the classic corset, where the pull comes across the back.
Hoping this gives something for people to think about…

  6. Is there anywhere I can purchase one for waist training + tummy control? I have been looking, but only come across ones without steel bone or made from latex. Please help =(

    1. Hi Kay, if you click on any of these photos, it will take you to the website or fanpage of the corsetiere who made these corset bodysuits! There you can ask them how to start a commission. But if you have a low hanging tummy, it’s possible that you can still waist train using a longline corset and not one with a closed crotch, as that could get annoying when going to the bathroom. I have galleries for longlines corsets here (for long waisted people) and here (for short waisted people).

  7. BEST DAMNED LIST THERE IS! <3
